The mood is spot on

JULIEN SAGOT
Piano Mal
(Simone)

Karkwa and Pawa Up First’s percussionist unleashes his inner hambone, diving into the role of a deep-voiced, supernatural Gainsbourgian crooner. He ably presides over a tense, brooding musical stew that’s been passed through multiple cinematic filters: expect mysterious background droning, thick, pulsating drum hits, disjointed guitar fuzz, melancholic piano chord progressions and tender acoustic guitar. The mood is spot on, while the songwriting is more uneven. 7/10 Trial Track: “Palissade” (Erik Leijon)
